During the 1970's, the Swedish band ( their name is an acronym made up from the first initial of each member: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid ) proved that a pop group could achieve enormous success even though it was from a small country. Their success began on April 6, 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with a song called '' Waterloo ''.Their wholesome image and catchy songs with flowing melodies made the group international pop stars. Their hook-laden singles often topped the European charts, such as in Great Britain, where they had eight number one albums and nineteen top ten singles, including nine number one singles. However, success in the United States was limited to a couple hit albums (Arrival and The Album) and four top ten singles, '' Waterloo '', no. 6 in 1974, '' Dancing Queen '', no. 1 in 1977, '' Take A Chance On Me '', no. 3 in 1978, and '' The Winner Takes It All '', no. 8 in 1980. For the majority of their career made only token appearances in the United States, but still had record sales in excess of many other successful bands. made use of television, radio, and print to a large extent to build their image with record buyers. With record sales in excess of 350 million was easily the most commercially successful band of the 1970's. They disbanded in August of 1982. |
